Madison - Recoing - Archer

The Bridges of Madison County

Co-directed by Ann-Sophie Archer
and Aurélien Recoing

The Bridges of Madison County is a stage adaptation inspired by Robert James Waller’s novel The Bridges of Madison County. The story follows the unexpected meeting between Francesca Johnson, an Italian woman living on a quiet Iowa farm, and Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer who arrives in Madison County to photograph its famous covered bridges.

Over the course of four days, their encounter grows into a profound and life-changing love story. The play explores themes of memory, longing, choice, and the delicate balance between personal freedom and responsibility.

Our theatrical adaptation focuses on the intimacy of the two characters and the emotional power of their encounter. The staging is intentionally simple and poetic, placing the actors and the storytelling at the center, allowing the audience to fully experience the depth and humanity of this timeless story.

The expected running time of the production will be under two hours, likely around 1 hour and 45 minutes, although the final duration will be confirmed during rehearsals.
